JAB Recruitment is currently working with our Operator client, based in Uxbridge, to source a Geologist for a duration of approximately 12-months (PAYE contract).

Job Summary:
Our client seeks a proactive, self-motivated, team-oriented petroleum systems analyst/basin modeler to assist in the evaluation of New Venture and M&A opportunities both onshore and offshore to grow the client's oil and gas portfolio.

The successful candidate will make a direct impact on growing the client's exploration and production portfolio in the global region. Our client has exciting and challenging targets to grow our portfolio and increase our global production.

A primary task will be to generate regional databases, building basin mastery, identify, evaluate opportunities for licensing, farm-in and/or assets for acquisition, based on petroleum systems analysis. Key skillsets are basin modelling, organic geochemistry and pore-pressure prediction. The candidate is expected to have a strong background in geochemistry, geology and expertise in hydrocarbon exploration.

The team is based in Uxbridge and reports to the General Manager Geoscience for Europe and Africa in the Business Development Centre. The role may involve international travel and the candidate should have strong cultural awareness.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Safety and Environment – Role models compliance with HSE policy. Ensures that all activities are planned and conducted in compliance with HSE policy.

Leadership – Manages the basin modelling tasks to produce results through effective collaboration and, where required, works closely with technical staff in Beijing, Calgary and Houston. Communicates effectively and consistently role models the client's values.

Technical Responsibilities: 

  • Lead basin modelling / petroleum system analyses / pore pressure prediction on key New Venture and M&A Projects, working across teams and locations, integrating data from multiple sources, industry and academia, and company contributors.
  • Working closely with team geologists and geophysicists, ranking basins based on regional petroleum systems and focus technical evaluations on areas likely to generate profitable entry opportunities.
  • Recommends acquisition and/or purchase of geochemical databases and reports for regional assessment, play trend analysis and prospect evaluation.
  • Evaluates and ranks new opportunities through bid rounds, data room visits and meetings with oil companies and contractors.
  • Provides an assessment of technical quality of partner or joint venture evaluations.
  • Works closely with Technical Assurance within the client's Guidelines Assesses to assess basin/play/prospect resource and risk.
  • Presents charge modelling aspects of plays & prospects to the client's Peer Review Team, Senior Management and Partners with clear recommendations to acquire, farm in, or drop new venture opportunities, based on your petroleum systems analyses.
  • Develop and disseminate technical expertise as part of the global Petroleum Systems team.
  • Work with petroleum systems experts in the Uxbridge based Exploration team, ensuring a common approach to evaluations.
  • Provide advice on basin modelling and petroleum systems to G & G staff.
  • Any other related duties as delegated by the line manager.
Collaboration - Collaborates effectively with other teams, and actively encourages individuals to build networks, share knowledge and participate in joint problem-solving activities.

Qualifications & Training:
  • An undergraduate degree (B.A, B.Sc. or equivalent) in a geoscience discipline.
  • A higher degree (Ph.D., M.Sc. or equivalent) in a petroleum systems focused course.
  • Strong geochemical or petroleum systems background.
Knowledge/Skills/Experience:
  • Demonstrable petroleum systems expertise across multiple basins which includes in working regional evaluations, source rock mapping, basin modelling and knowledge of heat flow models on continental, oceanic and hyper-extended crust.
  • Prior experience evaluating exploration, appraisal and development in frontier to mature basins in Africa is essential.
  • Demonstrable ability to generate, rank and recommend technically valid exploration prospects and leads; creating basin-scale and prospect-scale assessments in a timely manner.
  • Proven experience of working with a variety of source rock environments, with varied data sets.
  • Broad, demonstrable knowledge of clastics and carbonate petroleum systems.
  • A strong influencing ability, a high degree of flexibility and ability to handle uncertainty in outcomes.
  • Proficiency in the use of Zetaware software suites (Trinity, Genesis and KinEx) is essential, a knowledge of Petromod is advantage.
  • Experience of working on South Atlantic conjugate and Middle East basins is desirable.
  • Good time management skills, ability to work multiple projects concurrently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
